Gen2Gen connects adults 50 years and older with opportunities to serve youth from underserved communities.

Critical Bridge is a mentoring program that addresses historically underserved high school youth. Mentors will be part of a program combining national service and mentorships to provide a “critical bridge” for youth involved in a summer employment program and SJ Promise.

Service Year is a national initiative that promotes Americans from all sectors to come together through a shared opportunity, cultural expectation, and a new civic rite of passage. Service years can be a powerful pathway for youth to gain skills, improve their community, and advance their careers.

The Mayoral Fellows program helps build the City’s capacity for critical initiatives and programs. Fellows are high level executives, students and individuals from the private, nonprofit and public sectors.

Prepared Together San José is an effort to build community resilience and allow the community to better rebound after a disaster such as flooding, fire, and earthquakes. The current project addresses stormwater runoff.

Community members are able to take an active role in the beautification of their community through adopting parks and trails.

We believe it’s important to continue to explore new approaches to service and community engagement. From leveraging citizen-sourced data for the 2020 Census to using gaming to engage volunteers, there are many service and community engagement innovations in the City of San José.

The City of San José continues to be a great examples of a multicultural community. The diversity and cultural differences makes it a special place to live and visit. In celebration of this cultural diversity, the City is working to establish a Vietnamese-American Cultural Center (VACC).
